Our Top Favourite Audience moments

It was so heartwarming to speak to so many ambitious and passionate students, and to just chat to them about everyday stuff. I genuinely just enjoyed the friendly interaction and hospitality of the students.

My favourite moments often happened after the shows had finished. It was amazing getting to talk to the students and not only answer their questions but sometimes just have a chat. One of the stand-outs for me was when Team Nightingale went to perform at Temple Christian College (Paralowie Campus) in Adelaide. After our performance of Fact vs Fiction, we were asked some amazing questions about working as performers and artists, and when the teachers released the students for lunch so many of them stayed for a chat. It was so heartwarming to speak to so many ambitious and passionate students, and to just chat to them about everyday stuff. I genuinely just enjoyed the friendly interaction and hospitality of the students, and to have our audience so excited to get to know us that they would sacrifice their lunch time was honestly a beautiful moment. Thanks Temple Christian College!

How can I pick! There are so many amazing moments while performing and talking to all the amazing students after. The one that springs to mind is from when we were travelling in Naarm/Melbourne and we went to Cranbourne Secondary College on Bunurong/Boon Wurrung land. We did my favorite show ‘Power of Poetry’ and the students were amazing! They were so electric and really invested in the whole show. We had some amazing audience participation with people calling out encouragement or answers. But my favourite moment from the whole day was after the show a student had written a poem about my character’s journey through the show. It was BRILLIANT. It had an incredible rhyme scheme and the imagery was beautiful. I was filled with so much joy when he read it to me and I’m so grateful he did. I will remember that interaction forever.

I’ve had so many incredible experiences and moments with the thousands of students around Australia it’s hard to choose. I think if I had to pick one it is something a student said after a performance at Kempsey High on the lands of the Dunghutti Nation. After we performed “Power of Poetry” for one half of the school a student raised their hands to ask.

“Where do you get the confidence?”

There was something about this question that really struck at the heart of my favourite part of this job. Not only do we get to tour around the country and perform to kids who might never have seen theatre before, not only do we get to try and bring our enthusiasm for poetry to the stage and hopefully inspire students to look at it in a new light, but we get to prove that passion, fun and making a complete fool of yourself in front of others is allowed. I remember how difficult it was being a teenager, constantly worrying about what other people thought, it was the older kids, the ones who didn’t seem to live within the constraints of what was socially acceptable, that inspired me to stop worrying so much and live in a way that makes me happy. The idea that I am now passing that on and demonstrating that confidence is really just self love definitely warms my heart.
