Poetry in Action’s founders Hazem Shammas and Bryce Youngman met at the prestigious West Australian Academy of Performing Arts while undergoing a three year course in acting training. During their training they developed a love and passion for poetry and found that by approaching poetry with the skills of an actor the language, meaning and understanding of a poem is uplifted. They founded Poetry In Action in 2006 as a way to bring an actor’s mind, emotions and sensibilities to what can be an overlooked part of the arts.
PIA is founded on the belief that poetry is not written to sit on a page in silence but demands to be heard. PIA believes that poetry should be spoken, torn apart and put back together, twisted, turned, adored, derided, loved and hated with equal passion and simply enjoyed by both the actor and the audience.
Poetry in Action has become one of Australia’s most travelled theatre providers taking its low cost, high quality productions into hundreds of communities around Australia every year.
The news of Poetry in Action’s incredible performances and their ability to transform the way people think about poetry has spread and in 2018 PIA will chalk up its 450,000th audience member.
We’re aiming to grow even more into the future, working towards offering work for primary students and members of the general public!
